The Easter season is a time during which we explore the implications of the story of the Resurrection and the way this became the centre of the faith of Christians, carrying with it a great sense of joy and wonder. We do this through the various post-resurrection appearances of Jesus. However, there are, as with Christmas, some profound differences in the ways that Luke and Matthew report the events and the responses of the disciples.

Holy Week from Matthew's Gospel
Music notes
Matthew and Luke bring out the role of women in this part of the story. While there are a number of very successful female pop artists (and indeed jazz perfomers) there are many fewer female voices to be heard in the history of ‘classical’ music. So, while you might choose a song from Taylor Swift, try one of these too …
- Cellular Songs - Meredith Monk
- Airs for another Planet - Judith Weir
- Flute Poetic 1 - Jennifer Higdon (You might like to wonder what the pianist is doing by sticking his hand into the piano...)
We suggested that Holy Week reflections might be complimented by some of the more contemplative passages from Copland’s Appalachian Spring. Now would be the time to use his Variations on a Shaker Tune (Lord of the Dance) in worship.
