Why is the appointment of a headteacher important?

Appointing a headteacher is one of the most important responsibilities of a governing board. The appointment provides an opportunity to identify the leadership needed to guide the school through its next stage of development and to build on its existing strengths.

In Church schools, consideration should also be given to how candidates will support and sustain the school’s Christian vision and values. Effective leadership requires the ability to engage with the whole school community and ensure that the vision of the school continues to shape its life and work.

What support and guidance does ODBE provide?

ODBE provides advice, guidance and practical support throughout the headteacher appointment process.

Our advisers work alongside governing boards to help ensure that the process is thorough, fair and reflects the needs of the school and its community.

Support may include:

  • advice on planning and managing the recruitment process;
  • support with job descriptions and person specifications;
  • guidance on the Church school aspects of recruitment;
  • attendance at selection activities and interviews;
  • professional advice to support decision-making; and
  • guidance for governors throughout the appointment process.

We have produced a comprehensive Headteacher Appointment Handbook to support governors through each stage of the recruitment process. A copy is available from ODBE on request.

How should governors prepare for a headteacher appointment?

Headteacher recruitment requires careful preparation and planning. Before beginning the recruitment process, governors should take time to reflect on the current needs of the school, the leadership qualities they are seeking and how the school’s vision and aspirations should shape the appointment.

We strongly encourage governors involved in recruitment to engage with available guidance and support before the process begins.
