Lent is the penitential season which leads up to Easter. It has much historical significance; it is a fast and historically was a preparation for baptism and for Easter, it is a time of learning and a time of giving,
In the season of Lent, we start with the temptation of Jesus – the traditional beginning. This is a little confusing in some ways because in 5 short weeks we find ourselves at Palm Sunday with Jesus and the disciples entering Jerusalem. Somewhere we have to fit in the whole of Jesus’ ministry. This is one of the reasons why it is quite important not to rush into Easter, after all there are 7 weeks of Easter where we can explore the importance of the Resurrection.

Music (and more) notes
A suitable choice of music for this season would be Karl Jenkins' The Peacemakers. This is a work comprised of a range of individual sections including a setting of the Prayer of St Francis, Make me an Instrument of thy Peace.
The season is also traditionally concerned with reflection and spirituality. It would be appropriate to spend a greater amount of time in reflection during Lent than you might at other times of the year. Christianity is not the only world faith to have a fasting season nor to encourage reflection. This may be an opportunity to invite people of other faiths to come and talk about the place of periods of reflection and even fasting in their traditions.
